Cactus x GUAVA
“Come and devour me, eat your own flesh”
November 9, 2021
GUAVA hosted by Casa Voa
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
On November 9, 2021, Cactus teamed up with GUAVA for a phygital pop-up installation as a preview of the next Cactus issue. The installation Come and devour me, eat your own flesh consists of grow light, adhesive vinyl, a 3D object inserted through AR (augmented reality) and 26 tropical plants, set up in a 400 x 250 x 230 cm space at Casa Voa, Rio de Janeiro. It revolves around decolonization and the exercise of subverting cartesian notions by presenting elements like grow lights and tropical plants as a metaphor for the unsubmissive nature that insists on growing inside aseptic places such as the art gallery. The adhesive vinyl is both a provocation and an invitation, an irony based on the fact that anthropophagy has been historically weaponized by the colonization project to hierarchize bodies and beings in order to oppress and control. In its center, a 3D poster of Cactus next issue cover, a digital object that occupies the physical space of the installation as a ghost present in the violet spectrum.
Cactus is a Milan-based creative direction and consultancy practice conceiving images, spaces, campaigns, objects, and films. Founded in 2015 as a Fashion magazine, Cactus now represents the most stimulating experience of creative culture. With a focus on publishing, art direction, and imagery at large, Cactus acts as a multifunctional creative studio with a distinctive curatorial approach.
